Italian government to reimburse Alitalia passengers
Italy’s national airline Alitalia ceased operations on 14 October 2021. Are you in possession of an unused Alitalia ticket or voucher for 2021? Then you may request a refund. The Italian government has allocated a fund of 100 million euros to reimburse Alitalia passengers.
How to request a refund
Alitalia passengers with unused tickets or vouchers can request a refund for the full price of the ticket. How to request this refund depends on where you booked your ticket:
- Did you purchase your ticket through a travel agency?
Contact your travel agency to claim your money back. The travel agency will request the refund on your behalf. - Did you purchase your ticket directly through Alitalia’s website?
Visit this special website and fill in the appropriate form or phone +39 066 56 49.
Please note: the refund website is currently only available in Italian. We advise that you use an online translation service such as Google Translate to translate the forms. Further down, this article will also explain the terms and conditions for the forms in English.
Terms and conditions
The Alitalia refund website contains three different forms, applicable to three different situations:
- Form 1: You have an unused travel voucher
Did you receive a voucher, e.g. because your flight was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic?
Use this form the request a refund.
- Form 2: You have a (TravelPass) ticket for a flight that was cancelled
Did you purchase a ticket before 14 October 2021, for a flight scheduled until 14 October 2021? Or did you purchase a ticket before 24 October 2021, for a flight scheduled after 15 October 2021?
Use this form the request a refund.
- Form 3: You have voluntarily cancelled your trip
Did you decide to cancel your ticket for a flight voluntarily? And did you do so before the scheduled departure date?
Use this form to request a refund.
Alitalia will check if your request meets:
1. The requirements for voluntary cancellation
2. The requirements for voluntary cancellation due to the coronavirus pandemic
All forms contain fields for your first name, last name, phone number and email address. The voucher form also asks for your voucher number. The forms for cancellation ask for your ticket number. This ticket number should start with ‘055’.
Closing date
It is currently unclear if there is a closing date for requesting a refund through the government fund. We would therefore advise you to send in your request as soon as possible. This could increase your chances of being reimbursed. It may be a few months before you receive a response regarding your request.
