What can I do if I misspelled my name on an airline ticket?
You may recognise this situation. You book an airline ticket, but you are a little too quick in entering the details. In the confirmation you notice that you made a typo in your name. What is the best thing to do in this case? And does the airline have the right to ask you to buy a new ticket?
Step 1
Check the terms and conditions
Airlines are not required to offer a solution (free of charge) if you provide incorrect details. Still, it is sometimes possible to fix errors without buying a new ticket.
The airline's (general) terms and conditions or in your booking conditions set out what you do if you made a mistake. So take time to check the terms carefully and see if the error can be changed. Minor errors can sometimes be adjusted for free or for a small administrative fee.
Did you purchase supplemental insurance? Then you can also check the insurance policy conditions for error correction rules.
Stap 2
Contact the airline
According to the (general) conditions, are you entitled to (free) correction of your ticket details? If so, contact the airline as soon as possible to change the ticket details.
Are you not directly entitled to corrections? Also in that situation, it is best to contact the airline. Perhaps the airline will show some goodwill and offer some type of solution. For example, refunding paid airport taxes.
Step 3
Free help and advice
Have you looked at the terms and conditions? And you do not quite understand what you are entitled to? Or are you unsure if your mistake falls under a particular condition? The legal specialists at the European Consumer Centre (ECC) are happy to review the conditions. The European Consumer Centre's help and advice are always free of charge.
