The 20th edition of Safer Internet Day is on 7 February. This European initiative began in 2004 and is now a feature in more than 180 countries. Together, Safer Internet Centres call attention to a safer Internet, with topics from protecting digital identity data to cyberbullying. The European Consumer Centre believes it is important to be aware and safe when using the Internet. That's why we are sharing 5 tips for a little digital detox.

Tip 1

Turn off your phone when not in use

Our smartphones follow us everywhere, even when location services are turned off. So how about turning off your phone more often when you are not using it. Your phone really doesn't need to know where you are all the time.

Tip 2

Remove apps you do not use

Did you know that apps also collect data when they are not actively used? This is why it is always a good idea to do a good clean-up once in a while and remove unnecessary apps.

Tip 3

Turn off wifi when out and about

This prevents the phone from automatically connecting to public Wi-Fi networks you encounter on the road. Such networks may also collect your location data.

Tip 4

Be mindful of mindfulness apps

Apps can help support our mental health. They can help us deal with worrying or sleeping issues. But be careful what you consent to. Research shows that mobile health apps in particular often have inadequate privacy terms. Something to think about, especially considering they often analyse and share our deepest feelings.

Tip 5

Avoid being pressured

“Buy right now, only 3 items left!" Websites and apps are bursting with tricks to get us to buy as much as possible. So being offline for a while can also take the pressure off your wallet. Ordering online? Then try to recognise seller pressure and always ask yourself if a deal is really a good deal for you.
