Dating site ‘Parship’ has amended the precontractual information on its dating sites at the request of the European Commission and various European consumer rights organisations. This brings the websites into line with the requirements of European consumer law and consumers are better informed about what they are agreeing to.

Greater clarity on dating sites

Consumers looking for love via Parship will now be better informed about subscription costs. They will also be better informed about cancelling their subscription and any automatic contract extensions.

Joint investigation

In 2019, the network of European consumer rights authorities carried out a joint investigation and checked 50 websites in 13 EU countries. During this investigation, it was ascertained that the ‘Parship’ dating site had failed to inform consumers clearly enough about the right of withdrawal and extension of contracts.

Dialogue between Parship and authorities led to amendment of websites

The European Commission and various national authorities responsible for consumer protection challenged Parship about the unclear information. Parship amended the information on all its EU websites according to European consumer law.

National supervisory authorities strive for a level playing field

This is the first step in creating a level playing field in the online dating sector. National consumer rights authorities will now take further steps to compel the whole sector to comply with the same standards. Dating sites offer an important service and need to comply with the rules.
