Parent company of vliegtickets.nl declared bankrupt

Otravo, the parent company of vliegtickets.nl amongst others, was declared bankrupt by the court in Amsterdam on 20 December. Otravo was one of the biggest providers of flight tickets in Europe.

Booking sites

Otravo is the parent company of various booking sites in the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Scandinavian and Baltic countries, including Vliegtickets.nl, Schipholtickets.nl, WTC.nl, Travelgenio.com, Tripmonster.com and Travel2be.com. These booking sites did not organise trips themselves, but acted as agents in the sale of flight tickets, hotel reservations and car hire. Travellers could easily compare prices via these sites.

Once you have received your flight ticket, you can do the following:

  • Please contact the airline to check the status of your flight.
  • Check with the airline whether your contact details are available. This way the airline can keep you informed of any changes.
  • Do you want to change your flight? You can also contact the airline.

Provide a short description in English detailing why you are entitled to receive a payment. Be sure to add your booking confirmation and proof of payment. 

Waiting times

Bear in mind that consumers are last in line to get their money back when submitting claims to the insolvency practitioner. The chance of you getting your money back (in full) is therefore remote. It could also take months for the insolvency practitioner to respond.

The airline is responsible for carrying out the flight and for any refunds in the event the flight is cancelled. The airline may not refer you back to Otravo for a refund.

Chargeback

Travellers who paid for their flight tickets by credit card and do not receive a flight ticket can contact the credit card company to dispute the payment. Disputing a payment means the credit card company can reverse the payment if you do not get what you paid for. This way, you might still get your money back.

Guarantee fund

If you book a flight ticket via a booking site or directly with an airline and one of the parties goes bankrupt, you cannot appeal to a guarantee fund. There is no guarantee fund for flight tickets in the Netherlands yet.
