Buying and selling second-hand products is inexpensive and sustainable, which is why it is becoming increasingly popular. Platforms like the Lithuanian Vinted app are making buying and selling stuff increasingly easy. But what exactly are your rights? And what can you do if something goes wrong? We explain it all below.

Are you buying something on Vinted? Then in most cases, you are buying from a private seller. Some well-known rules of consumer law do not apply in this case. For example, you do not get a 14-day cooling-off period on your purchase. Vinted's terms and conditions set out your rights in detail.

Your rights as a buyer on Vinted

When you buy something on Vinted, you automatically pay a buyer protection fee. This buyer protection offers help if something goes wrong. For example:

  • The purchased product clearly does not match what you ordered.
  • The purchased product never arrives.
  • The purchased product is probably counterfeit.

In this case, report the problem to Vinted and provide proof. Vinted will try to find a solution for you. Does something not fit or is the garment not to your liking? Then you can return it only if the seller agrees to this.

Your rights as a seller on Vinted

Things can also go wrong if you are a seller on Vinted. Does the package get damaged or lost during shipment? Then Vinted will probably grant you some compensation. The compensation you receive depends on the shipping method you chose.

Does the buyer report to Vinted that there is something wrong with the product you sold and you think this is unjustified? Then it is up to you as the seller to provide evidence. Vinted takes a decision based on the evidence you and the buyer provide.

No mediation from ECC Netherlands

As of 1 October 2025, we will no longer accept cases related to issues with Vinted. Unfortunately, we cannot mediate in these cases for you. Because the buyer protection service is not regulated by law, we cannot compel Vinted to adopt a different stance. Additionally, we must make choices about the cases we handle, because we are receiving so many requests that the overall wait times are increasing.

Buyer protection
Vinted offers buyers protection. This is not a legal regulation, but a service provided by Vinted. As a commercial company, Vinted is free to determine which terms and conditions apply to buyer protection and how it decides in case of disputes. When you use Vinted's platform, you agree to these terms and conditions.
