The EU plans to update air travel rules. One proposal is that passengers would only get compensation for longer delays. The compensation amounts would also be adjusted. European citizens oppose these changes and are seeking support to stop them.

What will change with the new proposal?

The compensation still depends on the distance of the flight and the length of the delay. But according to the new proposal, the flight delay must last longer to apply for compensation. The maximum compensation amount would also be reduced by one hundred euros. It concerns the following changes:

Flights up to 3500 km

  • Applying for compensation for a 3+ hour delay becomes 4+ hours
  • Amount of up to €400 becomes a maximum of €300

Flights from 3500 km

  • Applying for compensation in case of 3+ hours delay becomes 6+ hours
  • Amount of up to €600 becomes a maximum of €500

What is the purpose of the action?

The initiators believe that travellers have less protection this way. They indicate that delays often last less than 4 hours. So, for most delays, air passengers would no longer be compensated. Or they get a lower amount. As a result, passengers are at a disadvantage when dealing with airlines. The change can also cause more delays, as airlines may be less inclined to depart a delayed flight promptly. That is why the initiators want to stop the proposed changes.

How can I support the campaign?

Do you think the compensation for flight delays should remain unchanged? Then you can support this European Citizens' Initiative by signing online. This way, you help decide on the European rules for air passengers.

Many signatures still need to be collected: a total of 1 million, from at least 7 EU countries. Every country must achieve a minimum. In the Netherlands, this is 22,000. Has this goal been achieved? Then, the European Parliament and the European Commission should carefully consider the opinions of European citizens when deciding on the Council's proposal.
