Goldcar and FireFly fined for unfair commercial practices

The Italian Competition Authority (AGCM) has imposed two fines on low-cost car rental companies, Goldcar (€ 2.000.000) and Firefly (€ 1.600.000) because of aggressive selling to consumers when picking up rented cars which were booked online.

For example, consumers were faced high deposit costs at the desk. In some cases the amount of the deposit was even higher than the permitted limit of the credit card as a result that consumers had no choice than concluding a liability insurance contract. The deposit was reduced with this.

Goldcar offered additional coverage which was presented as the best solution to avoid the risk of possible charges for damages or theft of the vehicle without clarifying which damages/events are covered by the CDW (the basic cover included in the contract). Both car rental companies are reproached by the AGCM.
